Invenergy Awards Advanced Energy Scholarship to Lackawanna College Students
CHICAGO (September 28, 2016) – Invenergy LLC today awarded two students from the School of Petroleum & Natural Gas (PNG) at Lackawanna College with the Invenergy Advanced Energy Scholarship. Representatives from Invenergy and the college joined students for an award ceremony at the college’s PNG laboratory.
In April of this year, Invenergy held a groundbreaking ceremony at its 1,500 MW Lackawanna Energy Center (LEC) in Jessup, Pa. The LEC is bringing more than 400 jobs to the area throughout the construction phase. As part of the company’s commitment to the community, they established a program that will award a total of $300,000 to local students over the next decade. Each academic year, the scholarship will cover up to one-half of the total tuition for two incoming PNG School students over the course of their two-year college career.
Designed in coordination with, and administered by the college, the scholarship is based on specific academic, financial and geographic criteria and aims to create new opportunities for the people of Jessup and the nearby Valley View School district. Invenergy wants to help ensure that the awardees – whether they are students just out of high school or those making a mid-career shift – have the aptitude and the drive to complete the rigorous program at the PNG School and later succeed in the energy industry.
“We are committed to this community and dedicated to ensuring it is a vibrant, prosperous place for everyone to live, work and learn,” said Dan Ewan, Invenergy’s Vice President of Development. “Our collaboration with Lackawanna College underscores our shared dedication to helping local students make a successful transition to careers within our dynamic and ever-growing energy industry.”
For more than 100 years, Lackawanna College has been dedicated to improving the lives of local residents and the community through an accessible, affordable, and practical curriculum. By partnering with Invenergy to complete the development of the Lackawanna Energy Center, Jessup and the greater Lackawanna region will benefit from the creation of new jobs and additional revenue for the community.
“This partnership, along with the other partnerships that the College and the School of Petroleum & Natural Gas have pursued, provides an important connection between education and industry that allows our students to succeed through internships, employment and continued advancement in their field,” Lackawanna College President Mark Volk said. “Most significantly, Invenergy’s commitment to funding scholarship opportunities for students in our PNG program helps ensure access for all students to programs proven to result in rewarding employment opportunities at family-sustainable wages and benefits.”
