Purpose and Need

The Town of Java has long suffered from an electric grid that is subject to frequent blackouts, brownouts, and voltage spikes. These cause damage to electronics and motors, and economic injury to households and businesses which depend on reliable electric supply. This is due to an aging grid with more demands being placed on it than it was designed for decades ago.

Additionally, New York State recognizes the need for transitioning the state’s electric supply to more renewable energy, including a mandate for 50% renewables by 2030, and the Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceeding by the Department of Public Service, to encourage increased use of solar energy and battery storage at the distribution-grid level.

Project Facilities

The Java Energy Center will have a maximum energy storage capability of 6 megawatts (MW) from an array of lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, and energy generation from 1.5 MW of solar panels.

Project facilities will include solar panels, commercial-scale lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries in two large pole-barn style buildings, inverters, and electrical interconnection facilities. Java Energy anticipates the interconnection facilities will include an underground interconnection line approximately 300 feet long connecting the facility to the local distribution circuit.

Public Hearing Information

December 5, 2017 | 7 pm Java Town Hall will be a joint hearing for the planning and zoning boards to get feedback from the public on the proposed Java Energy Center.
